FEEDBACK, FRIDAY JANUARY 30
Andre can win another Slam
Editor:
Mr Cronin, one question regarding Andre Agassi: In a world where
Martin Verkerk is a French Open finalist, two baseliners fought
for the Wimbledon title less than two years ago and Grand Slam
champions go walkabout during Slam finals (and if you don't believe
me, ask Al Costa how he got his trophy in 2002), you don't believe
a guy who's fiercely contested the last two Slam semis (and was
even your favorite to reach the final here), was the finalist
at the Masters and is pretty much the only guy playing with a
sense of urgency has a legitimate chance at number nine?
A good draw at the French, with a dry fortnight and one upset,
and he can reach the final, where odds are he meets a mental-case
(maybe even Safin, my vote for best clay courter never to have
won the French). One good day in Flushing, and he's a finalist,
with 100% crowd support.
Speaking as someone who wrote him off in 1993 (loss to Thomas
Enqvist in NY), in 1997 (loss to anyone anywhere) in 1999 (loss
to Alberto Berasategui at the Aussie) and in 2000 (the Zimbabwe
fiasco), forgive me if I'm not convinced.
