FROM THE USTA MEN'S CHALLENGER IN CALABASAS, CALIF. – Forget the venue. Forget the opponent. Forget even the result. The most important thing to take away from Jan-Michael Gambill's first round loss at the Calabasas Men's Challenger?

He got through it.

"It's the first match I've finished all year," Gambill said almost proudly of his 6-4, 7-6(6) loss to 246th-ranked Benedikt Dorsch.

Hobbled by severe pain since injuring his back last summer in World Team Tennis, it's a testament to where former Top-15 player Gambill is both physically and mentally in his career that just completing a match is a major accomplishment.
