A day of scandal: Hingis quits, Davydenko flails, vultures circleOh, by the way, Nalbandian beat Federer again; Sharapova crotch shotBy Matthew Cronin, TennisReporters.net It's been a hellish news day for the sport, one of the worst ever. Not only did colorful Martina Hingis retire again, saying that she didn't want to fight doping charges while still playing, but Nikolay Davydenko was again warned for not giving his best effort in his 6-2, 6-2 loss to Marcos Baghdatis in the third round of TMS Paris. As it was for so many other so-called experts in tennis journalism, the "please give us a comment" calls began to come into Inside Tennis from sports writers after the announcement. One notable show wanted the to know whether I had ever seen Hingis bending down and snorting something off a mirror, another wanted Hingis' cell phone number and then someone whom I've never met e-mailed me asking whether I could call Hingis' mother for her. © TennisReporters.net 2007 |
