TMC Shanghai grades: a crown to FedererRoger, Ferrer at the top of class; Djokovic, Gasquet wear dunce capsBy Matthew Cronin, TennisReporters.net Round-robin competitions always seem to bring out the best, and worst, in the elite eight. Men who brilliantly flash in their opening match can lose their way quickly in their second and then turn into ashes in their third. Others have a clearer vision of the long road ahead and, after a blowing a tire in the opener, call in their mental pit crew and get freshened up with a new set of wheels. TMC Shanghai was no different this year, with the Top 2 – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – looking sketchy early on, but still coming through to the semis, while the promise of Fernando Gonzalez and Richard Gasquet petered out. David Ferrer was the only man to show his best stuff in his opening four matches, but then he came down quickly to earth in his 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Federer in the final. Andy Roddick began impressively, but then fell down a dark hole. As expected, Nikolay Davydenko was a virtual no-show. Perhaps most stunning of all, Novak Djokovic had nothing left in the tank. © TennisReporters.net 2007 |
