Since
January there have been constant rumblings that Steffi Graf is
pregnant
but there was no truth to the rumor until now.
An
announcement came from Agassi Enterprises on Thursday, July 12
that
confirmed that Graf and Andre Agassi, who have been together since
the 99
U.S. Open, are expecting their first child in mid-December.
This
is a very exciting time for us, Agassi said. We
are so happy to
have been blessed with this gift.
The
announcement, which referred to Steffi as Stefanie, the name she
prefers
to be called these days, said the couple told friends and family
a few weeks
ago that a child was on the way.
The
German publication Bild had written the story and said that the
couple
are expecting a boy and would be married next week in Boca Raton,
the Florida
neighborhood where Steffi's mother and brother live and where
she also
maintains a home. There is no confirmation if the further Bild
information
is accurate.
Rumors
first surfaced that Graf was pregnant during the Australian Open
in
January, but obviously those early reports were unfounded.
Graf,
a 22-time Grand Slam champion, retired in July 1999 after winning
the
French Open and reaching the Wimbledon final. She had been suffering
with
back and knee problems for a number of years. Agassi, a seven-time
Grand Slam champion, won his most recent major at the Australian
Open in January.
