Sources
have told tennisreporters.net
that
the West and Hawaii have fallen out of the competition for the
U.S. vs. Slovak Republic first-round 2002 Davis Cup tie on Feb.
8-10, and that the tie will be played in Florida. Five Florida
cities Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, Naples and Sarasota
are in the running.
U.S.
Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe has said he prefers to play
the tie on a slow, outdoor hard court and was hoping to play the
tie in a desert locale where rain is unlikely. But all three West
sites that are capable of hosting the event have conflicts.
Both
Scottsdale and Indian Wells have tournaments that are too close
to the dates of the tie. The La Costa resort in San Diego County
has a major golf tournament just a few weeks after the tie and
decided that it would be too complicated to submit a bid. Plus,
La Costa was just purchased by KSL and is undergoing a management
change.
