The Scoop: WEDNESday, OCTOBER 6

Serena, Jennifer won't play until Philly,
WTA Championships status at risk

'Exempt' Sharapova won't play Moscow

U.S. tennis player Serena WilliamsRon Cioffi/TR.net
Will Serena miss the WTA Championships because lack of fall play?
Sources tell TennisReporters.net that Serena Williams will pull out of the Tier I tournament in Zurich that begins October 18 because she's doesn't want to travel abroad again this year and won't play again until Philadelphia, the week prior to the WTA Championships in LA. Southern California native Serena's decision puts her appearance at the season-ending WTA Championships at risk.

Currently No. 7 in a field that will feature eight players, Serena could fall to out of the Top 8 should No. 10 Venus Williams or No. 11 Vera Zvonareva do well at the Tier I tournament in Moscow next week or in Zurich. Serena currently holds a 296-point lead over No. 9 Jennifer Capriati.

As of Wednesday, Capriati hasn't signed up for any European fall tournaments and if she doesn't go very deep in Philadelphia, also might miss the The Championships.

No. 8 Maria Sharapova is playing in Tokyo this week (she beat Samantha Stosur on Wednesday) but has decided to skip her home country tournament in Moscow next week. She is entered in Zurich.

The 17-year-old Sharapova is playing her 17th tournament of the year, four more than allowed by the WTA Age Eligibility Rule, but the wildly popular Wimbledon is on the Tour's Exempt list.
